The Cost of Special Foods For Allergies, Celiac & Other Dietary Concerns?

My kids headed off back to school yesterday. I am now officially the mother of a 3rd grader, a 1st grader and a feisty little pre-schooler. I can hardly keep up! I know every parent feels this way but I just have to remark upon how quickly the summer flew by. As much as I am anticipating the cooler temperatures and bright golden colours of fall, I am a little sad to say good bye to summer. We had a great one and we packed in a lot of activity and a lot of mini-getaways. It's tougher to do those fun things with the school year in progress. We found a few great tasting, gluten-free lunch box snacks that should be at the top of your back-to-school list.
  •   Annie's Organic Fruit Snacks
  • Envirokidz Organic Crispy Rice Bars
  • Blue Diamond Nut Thins Crackers
  • Larabar
It's only a few weeks until moms and dads will be packing nutritious launches for their kids each morning, something that can be a bit of challenge for some parents. The challenge is more daunting for those parents whose children have food allergies, like gluten. For kids with gluten allergies or Celiac disease their choices for kid-friendly snacks aren't typically very interesting.Tucked away in those papers were three letters regarding allergies. According to the school nurse, severe food allergies affect more than 3 million school children. To keep kids safe, each classroom has a list of foods that are prohibited at snack time. In addition to factoring in allergies, many parents struggle with accomodating dietary restrictions. Try preparing these tasty, gluten-free snacks for kids this fall.
  • School time oatmeal "sundae"
  • Snack time smoothie
  • Open-faced pesto grilled cheese
  • Quinoa with honey, berries and flax seeds
  • Sunflower seed butter and apple bites.
However, there are more and more great gluten-free products available. Not only are they gluten free and nutritious, but they are fun. Our children with allergies no longer have to feel left out while eating plain snacks.
