The Frankfurt auto show is usually the beginning of a model year's auto show season, and this year is no exception with a host of 2014 models being shown for the first time. BMW is starting us off with a bit of 2 wheeled news this moning, having recently announced that the company's C Evolution electric scooter will be officially available for sale after its September 10th showing at frankfurt. The gas-powered versions of the C maxi-scoot have gotten rave reviews at fast, practical, sexy long distance tourers and capable city-dwellers as well. It is the energy storage modules. The C Evolution is a zero-emissions maxi scooter that offers a range of 100 km on a single charge and that can be topped up from a domestic power supply in under 4 hours. For example, in Road mode, the rider has maximum acceleration on tap as well as active battery regeneration when coasting and braking, while Eco Pro mode does everything it can do maximise the battery's life and therefore extend the range.
The market for an electric scooter, the options are limited to cheap, gutless two-wheelers with cobbled-together drivetrains and questionable reliability. The electric sccoter market needs a bigger player to up the game, and BMW is doing just that with the introduction of the C evolution. In Europe, Maxi-Scooters are massively popular, so it's no surprise that BMW will be launching the C evolution on the continent next year. But despite looking like the similarly styled C 600 Sport, BMW's first electric scooter is completely designed from the ground up. Its the eight-kwh, air cooled lithium ion battery and a little smaller than the pack fitted to our long-term Zero DS forms the chasis, connecting the forks up front to the swing arm out back. It sticks the electric motor directly to the rear hub, ruining handling in the process, BMW mounted it on the swing arm, which then drives the rear wheel through a belt.It rates the electric motor at 11kW or 15 horsepower, with a temporary boost to 47 HP and a impressive 53 pound-feet of torque when you twist the grip. The range is rated at over 60 miles in mixed riding and the ability to top up the back from zero to full in four hours using a 220 volt outlet.LED lighting, ABS, and even heated grips are standard, as is an incredibly trick TFT display for keeping tabs on speed and range. And like most EVS the C evolution has a series of settings that can either maximize performance or range along with regenerative braking and an integrated traction control system that cuts torque if the rear wheel starts spinning faster than the front. It's a Euro-only affair, with sales slated to begin across the pond next year.
