Apple is testing iPhone display screens as large as 6 inches. The screens, ranging upward from 4.8 inches, would be a pretty massive leap from the 4-inch display on the iphone 5. But don't expect to see them when Apple rolls out new iPhones next week. Apple is expected to roll out two different iphones-- an update to the iPhone 5 and a cheaper model that would be designed to appeal to buyers in emerging markets in China and India. Apple CEO Tim Cook has knocked Apple's rivals for making "trade-offs" in order pack larger screens into phones, although he has not ruled out such a move for future iPhones. The latest version of the device, the iPhone 5, features a 4-inch screen. That size is likely to remain on the iPhone 5S and 5C models that are expected to be announced.
Apple may choose to sell the iPhone with a larger screen, or it could take an approach similar to that of Samsung and HTC by offering multiple versions of the iPhone with different screen sizes. Apple rival sells phones with screen sizes much larger than the one found on the iPhone %. In recent years, many top devices have come out with screens larger than 5 inches and , in some cases, 6 inches. Six inches is reportedly the upper limit of Apple's iPhone ambitions, but it's not he only option Apple's allegedly evaluating. The Journal's sources say new plans currently under consideration involving big screens that are as "small" as 4.8 inches as well. Or in other words: way more- and larger- screens than Apple typically has. Six inches is pretty damn big. A iPhone is Galaxy Mega tops out an unusable 6.3 inches.
Either way, such moves would be counter to what late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs said during his final years with the company. Jobs was known for being adamantly against making an iPhone with a screen larger than 3.5 inches and a smaller-sized iPad. Since his death, Apple has released both, and it appears that it will continue to follow that strategy.
